Adversity and Friendship
GUNDE SVAN

The difference was tremendous between my poor showing at the World Championships in Obersdorf in 1987, and the successes I had winning Olympic medals in Sarajevo and Seefeld in 1984 and in 1985.

I had been spoiled by the telegrams that used to come in - 300 to 400 of them! They were good-luck wishes and congratulations from everyone, from friends to cabinet ministers and Prince Bertil of Sweden. In Obersdorf I got only... guess... two telegrams!

I’ve carefully saved them. I have them on the wall in my office. One came from the coaches at the ski gymnasium in Torsby: 'Don’t loose courage! We believe in you. Alf, Inge and Perra.'

And the other came from my fellow workers at Luna. 'Tough, cheerful and plucky, that’s how you are when you get beaten, but we at Luna believe you’ll be back in form to win the rest.'

Tough, cheerful and plucky... Well, just barely.

They were the only ones who understood how important it was to send telegrams to people when things are going badly; they understood that I needed support.

That’s when you get to know who are your real friends. I had thought I had so many.

I want everyone to understand this. It is important to be there as a support when a friend is having problems. It means so much.

Don’t be disappointed if you don’t have as many friends as you thought. Be happy about your real friends, who are there when they are really needed.
