Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky Country

Located in Southwest Montana just a short drive from Yellowstone National Park, Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky is the place for a winter vacation with endless possibilities.

The Ranch’s 80 kilometers of expertly groomed cross country ski trails offer gentle rolling terrain for beginners and more challenging uphills and downhills for advanced skiers. Trails beckon skiers through aspens, lodge pole pine forests and out into wide sweeping vistas of snow-covered valleys and the surrounding mountain ranges.

The Ranch also leads thrilling backcountry ski tours into nearby Yellowstone and the Spanish Peaks Wilderness area behind the Ranch. The transformation of the winter Yellowstone landscape is an extraordinary thing in itself. Add to it the geothermal features and the worlds’ largest herds of elk and bison foraging for grass near thermal vents and the experience becomes otherworldly.

Some Ranch guest prefer to mix their Nordic skiing with alpine skiing, and nearby Big Sky Ski Resort and Moonlight Basin offer endless ski terrain just a ten minute shuttle ride from the Ranch. Oh, and there are dog sledding adventures at Big Sky Resort as well.

Another way of experiencing the quiet winter solitude is on snowshoes, and the Ranch has designated snowshoe trails, naturalist guided tours and instruction specifically designed to help teach guests to travel efficiently through a variety of beautify terrain.

As always, the trout are in the rivers and a little less shy during the winter months. In fact, it is a wonderful time to be on the water. The Ranch is an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Lodge and well seasoned guides lead trips on the nearby Gallatin River.

For kids ages 4-18, the Outdoor Youth Adventures program provides a great way to gain ski skills and have fun building snow caves, sledding, animal tracking, snowshoeing and learning about the natural environment surrounding the Ranch.

Once a week, guests experience a step back in time on a horse-drawn sleighride dinner, gliding through the snow-covered pines for a prime rib feast prepared over a century old wood cook stove at a secluded backcountry cabin. Music, great food and a nighttime ride through the crystalline winter woods makes for a truly memorable evening.
